Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson stated he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal accident during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when a pair of track officials darted across the track directly in front of him

The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when marshals were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to replace his compromised front wing

Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I might have... taken their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was observing"

"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two individuals sprinting across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was extremely hazardous"

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somewhere but I've never encountered that before, and I can't recall observing that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body

"On lap three, track officials were informed and placed on standby to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had made a pit stop, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a safety warning flag was shown in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what occurred after that point"
