Similar to the recent storm hit the northern region the prior day, Manchester City swept Manchester United away at the Etihad. It was a emphatic 3-0 win for their manager's side thanks to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their title credentials as they consolidated their position at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Defeats for United

This outcome signalled consecutive Women's Super League losses for Marc Skinner’s side for the maiden instance since May 2024, leaving them a sizable gap off the league leaders with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

Manchester United's capability to juggle league and continental football with a small squad has been a widely debated topic since they secured entry to the European competition. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the matchday that would truly test this capability. The most obvious change came from the United manager at the half-time as Malard came on for Terland but by this time it was too late to alter the outcome of the contest. Former City player Jess Park came closest, rattling the post, but the visitors were offensively poor and did not manage to register a solitary shot on target.

The hosts, meanwhile, could have added to their cushion when a delightful Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it was insignificant to the winning team. Having failed to beat any team who placed above them last season, City's side now have victories against the Gunners and United to place them in a commanding situation after the opening fixtures.
